Course Synopsis

This course provides participants with a strong foundation in computer hardware and its role in enabling effective user-computer interaction. Participants will explore key hardware components such as the motherboard, CPU, RAM, storage devices, ports, and cables, and understand how these work together within a computer system.

The course also develops practical skills in assembling and upgrading a PC, assessing component compatibility, and troubleshooting common hardware installation issues. In addition, participants will examine the function of BIOS in the boot process, optimise BIOS settings for better performance, and diagnose and resolve typical boot-related problems encountered in desktop computing environments.

Prerequisites

Language

  • Attained at least WPLN level 5; or
  • Obtained Grade C6 for GCE O-Level English; or
  • Other equivalent qualifications.

Academic

  • Obtained at least a pass or C6 at GCE O-Level in at least 3 subjects; or
  • Candidates with other qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis; or
  • Mature candidates aged ≥ 30 years old with 8 years of relevant working experience.

  • Compatibility considerations when upgrading components
  • Step-by-Step Guide to assembling a PC
  • Troubleshooting common issues during PC build-up

LU 4: BIOS & Process Flow of Booting

  • Introduction to BIOS
  • Understanding the boot process and the role of BIOS
  • Configuring BIOS settings for optimal performance
  • Troubleshooting boot-related problems

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Acquire a holistic understanding of computer hardware, encompassing its definition, significance, identification of core components, and their pivotal role in facilitating user-computer interactions.
  • Attain a comprehensive understanding of computer hardware, encompassing the primary roles of essential components like the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and storage devices, as well as familiarity with a variety of user interaction tools and the foundational mechanisms of data transfer via ports and cables.
  • Build capabilities for assembling and upgrading a PC, discerning component compatibility during upgrades, and effectively troubleshooting prevalent challenges that arise during the PC building process.
  • Articulate the role of BIOS in the boot process, optimise BIOS settings for enhanced system performance, and proficiently diagnose and resolve boot-related issues and errors.
